Early in the history of the IASC, there was no real continuity from one year to the next due to the fact that the entire executive board changed with each new election. In order to provide a means of dealing with problems and policies of the board from year to year and to provide a clearinghouse for the organization, the executive board recommended to the Constitution Committee that the addition of the office of Coordinator to the IASC executive board be considered at the 1955 convention. This office would be held by an advisor to be appointed by the executive board and serves a three year term. The convention accepted the recommendation and thus the board was made more stable. The office of Coordinator still exists today though is has undergone name changes in 1967: from Coordinator to Executive Secretary and then again in 1982: Executive Secretary to Executive Director.

Advisors
The student council advisor is a key component in making their local high school student council function efficiently as well as the district and state organizations. As with the Executive Director position above without dedicated student council advisors from throughout the state the IASC and district structures would not function nearly as effectively as they do presently.
